WELSUMMER

 

Named after the village of Welsum Holland. It was imported in 1928 mainly for it's large brown eggs, which remains its special feature, some eggs being mottled with brown spots. It has distinctive markings & colour, & comes into the light breed category, although it has good body size. 

                                                                                    

          


SALMON FAVEROLLE

 

Faverolles originate from the village of Faverolle Northern France & were created from a mix of several different breeds of hen. The first true description of the breed came in 1893 & the Salmon variation appeared later in 1895. They were breed specifically for meat production but they also produce a good number of eggs. So are true dual purpose birds. They are a heavy soft feather breed & have a striking beard & muffling. They are a five toed breed.

The origin of the Silkie hen is uncertain although they have been around for several hundred years. It is thought that they originated in India ,China or Japan & they arrived in Europe around 200 years ago where they were sold as crosses between rabbits & chickens! They are a light weight chicken with a broad stout looking body which is covered in fine fluffy feathers. they have bluish/back skin & legs & also carry the 5th. toe. They have a life spam of around 9 yrs, they can be easily tamed & considered a real pet which makes them especially suitable for children. They make very good mothers so are used widely as broodies.
